5 in 5. Five technologies that will impact the world in five years

Last week we had here the IND+I 2017, an event that allowed us to listen and talk with Mariana Mazzucato and other speakers of great prestige. Enormous thanks to the organizers for that privilege!

One of the people who participated in the event was Elisa Martín, Director of Technology and Innovation of IBM Spain, Portugal, Greece and Israel. Elisa’s conference referred to IBM’s “5 in 5” initiative, which annually presents the five technologies that are believed to have the potential to change in five years the way people live, work, and interact. You can find detailed information at http://www.research.ibm.com/5-in-5/

Here you have a brief summary of the 5 predictions of 2017 (You also find the links to superb videos that IBM has prepared for explaining them):

The first prediction refers to Artificial Intelligence: In five years, technology will be able to recognize in our words (in how we speak and in what we write) indications of our physical and mental health. Technology will detect patterns in our speeches and in our writings. These cognitive systems will help physicians detect early-stage health disorders. Https://youtu.be/DnYUNQVcVnI

In five years we will be able to “see” beyond the visible light. 99.9% of the electromagnetic spectrum is not visible to us. Today we already have devices that “see” other wavelengths and apply them to the medical field, to get images of the interior of our body, to check our bags in the security control of airports, etc. etc. But all these devices are highly specialized and expensive and only cover a part of the electromagnetic spectrum. In five years we will have technology for our daily use that will allow us to “see” in opaque environments. For example, to better drive the car through the fog. Https://youtu.be/TaOOb89ilYk

Also in 5 years we will have applications that will allow us to see the world from another perspective. Internet of Things and the enormous amount of information that will generate, adequately treated and represented, will show us the complexity of the world. The fourth prediction refers to medical devices, specifically nanochips that will travel within our body and provide detailed information on parameters relating to our health. The analytics will be fast and total. Https://youtu.be/c0o0myb7Te4

Finally we will have intelligent sensors that will give us a lot of information on environmental pollution https://youtu.be/eXF14qeJzfk

All of them are technologies for a better world.
